Getting Started with Infinite Backrooms

A calm first-hour plan for the Steam demo’s infinite procedural world.

Getting Started

Infinite Backrooms is designed to feel mathematically endless: chunk-based generation stitches Office Rooms, Supermarket, Pool Rooms, Parking Lot, and the No-Walls Room into one continuous space without loading screens. This Getting Started guide helps you enter that world with intention instead of wandering until the fluorescent hum becomes the only plan you have.

The project, developed by ww_azevedo and published under @OverrideGameStudio, plans Early Access around August 14, 2026. Until then, the Steam demo is the best way to learn movement, seeds, co-op, and the Bacteria threat. Treat everything you learn as living knowledge — Early Access will expand environments, entities, escape systems, and multiplayer polish.

What to decide before you launch

  1. Tone: Do you want horror pressure or liminal tourism? If you want calm photography-style walks, enable No Entity Mode when available. If you want stakes, leave Bacteria active and read Survive Bacteria after this page.
  2. Solo or co-op: Solo teaches audio cues and navigation. Co-op (up to six players with proximity VOIP) teaches communication discipline — see Co-op Multiplayer.
  3. Hardware sanity: Confirm you meet System Requirements so stutter does not masquerade as horror design.

First-hour checklist

Minutes 0–10: install and settings

Follow How to Play the Demo to install from Steam. Set headphones on, verify microphone if you plan proximity voice, and skim Controls. Brightness and audio mix matter more here than in most shooters: distant hums and footfalls are gameplay.

Minutes 10–30: learn the biomes without greed

Walk until you notice transitions. Infinite Backrooms does not soft-load a “next level”; the world shifts around you. Use the Environments Hub later for deep biome notes, but for now only learn signatures:

  • Office Rooms: carpet, cubicles, endless fluorescent grids
  • Supermarket: aisles and wrong products
  • Pool Rooms: warm water, tile echo
  • Parking Lot: concrete columns and open sightlines
  • No-Walls Room: open space that still feels unsafe

Minutes 30–50: capture a seed

Open Seed System and write your first seed plus a short landmark note in the Seed Notepad. The point is not perfection — it is proving you can recreate a mood with friends later.

Minutes 50–60: pick a goal

Either practice evasion with Bacteria active, or attempt a disciplined Exit hunt using Find the Exit. Ending a session with a written note beats ending with a vague feeling that “it was endless.”

Mindset that keeps you progressing

Infinite spaces punish random sprinting. Move in short legs, look backward when you turn corners, and treat open rooms as information, not safety. In co-op, proximity voice means distance equals silence — agree on regroup points before anyone peels off for “just one more aisle.”

If you feel lost in a productive way, you are playing correctly. If you feel lost because settings, seeds, or lobby flow are confusing, return to the sibling guides linked here instead of grinding the same mistake.

Watch a real demo run

The embedded video above shows a community exploration of the procedural demo, including interconnected supermarket, pool, and parking spaces without boundary loads. Use it to calibrate expectations, then build your own seed notes rather than copying someone else’s route blindly.

After your first session

Return to the Guides Hub whenever you need the full tutorial index. The Backrooms will still be there — your notes are what make the infinite world usable.
